History
Analysis
Meaning
The idea behind "Fire" is simple; when Jimi arrived at Margaret Redding's house at Christmas 1966, he asked if he could stand in front of the fire as, underdressed as always, he was cold. Redding's German Shepherd dog was in the way, which created the inspiration for one of Jimi's most famous lyrics: "Move over, Rover, and let Jimi take over."[5]
Style
"Fire" is a funky song featuring a gripping R&B hook riff. Mitch Mitchell pulls out all the stops in the song with exquisite drum fills here and there, and he and Noel Redding provide backing vocals of "let me stand next to your fire" in the chorus. The solos are well-placed and controlled, eventually fading out at the end of the song.
Live
When played live, "Fire" was not often changed drastically. Occasionally sped up, the song was a live staple throughout the career of Hendrix. The main change was to the solo at the end, and sometimes the one in the middle, which were often extended in classic Jimi fashion. In the verse, guitar was also improvised on slightly.
Lyrics
Lyrics in (brackets) are backing vocals. Backing vocals preceded by a '+' indicate that they are sung at the same time as the previous line.
