"Love or Confusion" is a song by The Jimi Hendrix Experience, originally released on their 1967 debut album Are You Experienced. The song was written by Jimi Hendrix and recorded at either De Lane Lea or Regent Studios some time in November 1966.[1][2] Additional recordings took place on April 3rd, 1967 at Olympic Studios.[2]

HistoryEdit

"Love or Confusion" was recorded in November 1966, and appeared on both versions of Are You Experienced. After the song's recording for the album, "Love or Confusion" was only ever performed once more; at BBC Studios for a radio show on February 13th, 1967.[3]

AnalysisEdit

MeaningEdit

"Love or Confusion" is Hendrix wondering whether he has found love and happiness ("Is that the stars in the sky") or just more betrayal and depression ("or is it rain falling down"). The lyrics show the battle between emotion and logic ("My heart burns with feeling ... my mind is cold and reeling").[4]

StyleEdit

The song has a droning effect with the sustained F chord running most of the way through the verses. Hendrix insisted that his voice be kept back in the mix, which gives "LoC" a ghostly quality.[4]

Is that the stars in the sky, or is it raining far from now?Edit

Will it burn me if I touch the sun, so big, so round?Edit

Is that the stars in the sky,
Or is it rain falling down?
Will it burn me if I touch the sun, yeah,
So big, so round?

Will I be truthful, yeah,
In, uh, choosing you as the one for me?
Is this love, baby,
Or is it, uh, just confusion?

Oh, my mind is so messed up,
Goin' round and round.
Must there be all these colours,
Without names, without sounds?

My heart burns with feeling, but uh,
Woah, my mind is so cold and reeling.
Is this love, baby,
Or is it confusion?

Oh, my head is pounding, pounding,
Goin' round and round and round, round.
Must there always be these colours,
Without names, without sounds?

My heart burns with feeling,
Oh, but my mind is cold and reeling.
Is this love, baby,
Or is it, uh, just confusion?
