HistoryEdit

AnalysisEdit

MeaningEdit

The title refers to the actual third "stone" from the Sun, Planet Earth, which shows Hendrix's interests in science-fiction and space, and also fits in with the theme of the spoken lyrics. The lyrics themselves are written as a conversation between "star fleet" (voiced by Hendrix) and "scout ship" (voiced by Chas Chandler), in which the latter is "in orbit around [Earth]".

StyleEdit

"Third Stone" has been identified as one of the earliest fusion songs, mixing elements of classic rock and jazz. The song is mostly an instrumental, and does not feature traditional singing, only spoken vocals. A relatively simple yet funky bassline is heard throughout, and the main riff is relaxed and gives the feeling of a drug-induced high, though is also reminiscent of space.

LyricsEdit

Hendrix: Star fleet to scout ship, please give your position, over.
Chandler: I am in orbit around the third planet from star known as Sun, over.
Hendrix: May this be Earth, over.
Chandler: Positive. It is known to have some form of intelligent species, over.
Hendrix: I think we should take a look.

Strange, beautiful grass of green,
With your majestic silken scenes.
Your mysterious mountains I wish to see closer,
May I land my kinky machine?

Strange, beautiful grass of green,
With your majestic silken scenes.
Your mysterious mountains I wish to see closer,
May I land my kinky machine?

Although your world wonders me,
With your majestic and superior cackling hen,
Your people I do not understand,
So to you I shall put an end.
And you'll never hear surf music again.
